Onuma Quasi-National Park – Ice Smelt Fishing and Star watching

The Onuma area was created by the 1640 eruption of Mt. Komagatake in the southern Hokkaido, which gave rise to the rare landforms we see today. The Onuma lakes and marshes have been designated as a quasi-national park and registered under the Ramsar Convention, and a wide variety of creatures, including migratory birds, live in harmony with humans. This area was the first place in Hokkaido to adopt Western-style agriculture, and fishing has been conducted in Onuma and Konuma for over 100 years. You will enjoy experiencing one of the industries that has supported Onuma, namely Ice Smelt fishing. In the evening, you will take a walk in the forest to see the stars from the lakeside of Onuma. The tour is to enjoy the nature of Onuma in winter.

Traveler’s Digest

Meet your Wakasagi guide, an active fisherman in the area, at JR Onuma Koen Station. We will start by moving to the best point according to the weather and time of the day. Once you arrive at the fishing spot, you will set up your tent and try to make a hole in the ice with a drill. The ice on the Onuma can be up to 50cm thick. With Mt. Komagatake, the mountain that created the Onuma, in the background, we enjoy Ice smelt fishing. The fish we catch will be fried and tasted on the spot.
In the evening, we will go to the Onuma lakeside forest to watch the stars. We will walk through the quiet forest of Onuma and look at the beautiful starry sky.
