Learn about the culture of the Shiraoi Ainu people and tour Noboribetsu Hot Springs in Shikotsu-Toya National Park

A local Ainu guide will share the culture of the Ainu people living in the Shiraoi and Noboribetsu areas and take you on a tour of the volcanoes in Shikotsu-Toya National Park and the hot spring village that was built around the natural spring those volcanoes created. First, you will learn about the history and culture of the Ainu people at Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park, a national facility opened in Shiraoi Town to assist in the revival and growth of Ainu culture. Lunch is a traditional Ainu meal in a restaurant run by local Ainu women. A guide will then take you to Noboribetsu Hot Springs in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, where you’ll hike to the source of the spring. At the end of the tour, you can soak your feet in the natural hot spring river that flows through the hot spring village.

Meet at Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park in Shiraoi. An Ainu guide will share the history and culture of the Ainu people in this facility that seeks to assist in the revival and growth of Ainu culture. You will then take a walk through Shiraoi’s Ainu neighborhood and enjoy a traditional Ainu lunch at a restaurant run by local Ainu women. After lunch, you will head to Noboribetsu Hot Springs, one of Japan’s most popular hot spring villages, and hike through primeval forest to the source of the spring. The village is located in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, where volcanic activity produces nine different hot springs, totaling 10,000 tons per day. At the end of the tour, you can soak your feet in the natural hot spring river running through the village.
