In western Hokkaido, on the western coast of the Shakotan Peninsula -- Kamoenai Village, Tomari Village, Kyowa Town, and Iwanai Town.
Throughout the Edo, Meiji, and Taisho Periods the area prospered from Pacific herring fishing. The elegance of that time period can still be felt. With bounties from the sea, famous hot springs, the base of the Niseko mountain range, and wide rice fields, you can see both the blue sea and ski resorts.
Passed down from their ancestors, in each town there is a spirit of mutual respect and a love of the region. Tied by the name “Ganwu,” there is a strong connection that exists for the people in the region.
A distinctive example of this respect for the bonds between people is that there are multiple stores that have been operating for over 100 years.
Because everyone knows the deliciousness of neighboring town’s seafood and produce, they have know the face of who produced almost everything that they consume.
